Today I would like to write a few words about wheelset Spinergy Xyclone Disc. Mine wheelset is from 2012, but it dosn't change a thing – they are durable and reliable. How exactly reliable and durable, time will tell...but let's get to the point, here's what we can find out on Spinergy site:

    • weight: 1695

    • rim width: 23mm

    • spokes double crossed, 32 per wheel

    • flexibility of mounting front wheel, everyone can find own kind [9mm, 15mm, 20mm]

    • PBO spokes in 8 colours.

What first draw my attention, was colours variety, as well as ways of mounting front wheel [if, in any case someone need rear axle mount check other models], and the PBO technology...which is the future :) It was the future back in SPOX times, and now it still is :) What makes it so unique is durability combined with flexibility. Spoke itself is like a thin tube within which there are thousands fibres. When it comes to practice, it shows great stiffnes and at the same time flexibility when [for instance] we ride through sharp objects, like rock, roots. Only way I can find to explain this phenomena is resistance to stretch, especially in long period of time. In case of sudden riden through rock gardens spokes bend, after what they get back to primary position without stretching itself. Another interesting thing is when You take the spoke[s] of the wheel, you can make a lace. Easilly.

On the other hand, we won't get ceramic bearings in the set, although we can change them by ourselves if we like...or if we need to :) On the bright side, we can easilly find them on eBay.

That is not what makes those wheels really worth a while...and money. The Spinergy site says: “faster by design”, and I think it's not a scam. Usually, companies make some slogans just to keep the sales up, but in this case it's not a scam. I can vouch for that. At first I was a bit sceptical about that, because when You think, “how they can be faster by design?”...I mean only by design...well, what can I say...they can, and they surely are ! Once, when I was coming back from training [or trip, how I use to call it] I met buddy, who trains thriatlon...and we were just going and talking...and after a while he asked: “why do You go so fast?” and I asked back: “How fast?” and he said 38km/h [which is about 22,5 m/h]...and that WAS surprising, because it didn't fell that way...it lasted for about 1 mile/1.5km before I split...and I was riding my Yeti [which You can find on the main site]. I have a theory, that faster You go, the lighter they feel. How can it be ? Propably light rim and marksmanship of rear hub. Even though, freewheel is alloy and it's far from being the most durable. Still, can be change without any problem, and with great avability. Another thing is mechanism of rear hub, which is simple enough to keep it in good health, and it's bumproof also. As far as I can tell anyway... :) This patent is far more reliable than competition [like Mavic], because You don't have to change entire hub body, only freewheel, axle and eventually bearings. Everything available, separately of course.

One of major drawback is UST un-avability, which can be compensated by setting UST by Yourself, using right rim tapes, glue, and right tyres. I've heard it worked, and it's PROPABLY working, and I cannot vouch for that. Never use it. I find it better to maintain and change tube [easier] than changing tyre...Other thing is disc mount, for 6 bolts. I use torx, get them along with discs.

Another thing, which customers might not like, is you have to buy AXLE cups for front wheel separately. 9Mm ends are included, but forget about 15mm and 20mm. You have to remember about it, when You buy those wheels. They are not expensive, but when You forget [like me], You're gonna have to wait some extra time, to get them.

When it comes to usage, I've got them from 2012 and they have more like 3000km, [or 1800miles if You like] in light terrain, with great amount of water/snow/frost. When I looked inside few months ago, I noticed they are in great shape, astonishing actually. They needed little cleaning and greasing and they were ready to go...as for now, they are doing great and I'm not gonna hide, that I expect them to do so in very very long term :)

Things I read about those wheels, although never experienced that is: greasing right after byuing, some are not greased at all, checking of all the sealing within the hubs, I would say once a year...and checking after hardcore terrain ride of course :)
